About Sistersville Church of Christ

Sistersville Church of ChristThe Church of Christ in Sistersville was established Sunday, May 30, 1915, when 21 people met in a home. The following Sunday, June 6, 1915, they met in another home, with 30 people present. They then rented City Hall and met there the third Sunday, June 13. The brethren continued meeting in City Hall until January, 1916, when they secured permission to meet in an unused school building. They met in the school building for a little over two years. At the last Wednesday meeting in the school building, March 6, 1918, there were 40 present.

The church purchased a building on Hill Street; their first service at Hill Street was Saturday, March 9, 1918, with the beginning of a gospel meeting. The dedication service for the Hill Street building was held Saturday, June 9, 1918. The church continued to meet there until December of 1953.

The church continued to grow. They bought a preacher’s house October 6, 1948.

Growth and the condition of the Hill Street building showed the need for a new building. In 1951 lots were purchased where the building now stands on Oxford Street; two back lots were donated. In April, 1952, a building fund was started and plans for a building were made. Early in 1953, the building was begun. The first service was held on Wednesday, December 9, 1953. The church building was dedicated April 11, 1954. An educational wing was added to the building in 1965. In 1972 the Annex was built.

The church in Sistersville continues to offer the Gospel to our community and the world through developing internal strength and reaching out locally and internationally. The numbers are small but the spirit of dedication and giving is strong.
